Our Mission

CHUANG Stage cultivates joyful and radical Asian American stories that pioneer a translingual activism in the arts.

Our Vision

A future in the American theatre advanced by theater artists and audiences of Asian descent.

Our Values

  • Ensuring inclusive and accessible theater experiences for pan-Asian language communities in Boston.

  • Harnessing the power of arts in nurturing the cultural well-being of the Asian American community.

  • Celebrating the contributions of immigrants in shaping the diversity of America.

  • Cultivating a progressive and disruptive work environment in the theater industry.

  • Fostering inter-racial solidarity and unity among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

Founded in 2018, CHUANG Stage started with three Asian American theatremakers at Emerson College making bilingual Asian plays to challenge the racial oppression, stereotypes, and underrepresentation of Asians in the theatre of Greater Boston. As a women-and-queer-led organization, CHUANG Stage grew into an artistic home for pan-Asian theatremakers in the Greater Boston area, activating audiences in Boston Chinatown and underserved Asian immigrant communities, and is known nationally for our curation of new works that advance the translingual aesthetic.

CHUANG Stage identifies itself as both a professional theatre and community organization, changing the faces of Boston theatre by bringing more pan-Asian artists into sight, uplifting lesser-told stories toward a more just future in Boston, and introducing Asian American joy and justice for all.

Our annual two-show season is produced in residency at the renowned Boston Center for the Arts via a "Pay-As-You-Are, Starting from $0" model, which provides radical access to the Asian American community to experience high-quality new work and in-depth community discussions surrounding these plays. Our signature Found in Translation series stage plays in community public spaces in Boston Chinatown, reimagining theatre as a public art that builds spatial justice, advocacy, and community well-being for an immigrant neighborhood.

Our flagship educational program, CHUANG Lab at Emerson College, provides accessible theater education and hands-on production opportunities to meet the needs of Chinese immigrant youths. Supported via free workshops, mentorship, and industry opportunities, CHUANG Lab imagines an equitable pipeline from college theatre to professional arts. Learn more about CHUANG Lab@Emerson here.

CHUANG Stage regularly partners with Boston's regional theatre companies on Asian American-focused productions toward community accountability, by offering tailored community engagement, dialogue and panel curation, and language accessibility tools. Past partnerships include Central Square Theatre, ArtsEmerson, Huntington Theatre Company, and more.

“CHUANG” is pronounced like “tron”, meaning to begin, to initiate, to start, and to create in Mandarin Chinese.

Happy CHUANGing! We are so glad you are here.
